The 2021 BMW 5-Series received a comprehensive but modest upgrade, which was necessary for successful competition with the restyled Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the still-fresh Audi A6.

The design of the novelty is easily distinguishable by the previous version of the model. In the foreground are the new standard adaptive LED headlights, which have a smaller profile and are equipped with two L-shaped daytime running lights. These DRL duplicate turn signals. The enlarged radiator grille emphasizes their affinity with the 7-Series and X7 models. The side view holds a curious line of characters that turns into a C-pillar. Also, note the new taillights and trapezoidal tailpipes of the exhaust system.

Interior updates are pretty subtle. All modifications come with the BMW iDrive 7 infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touch screen and include navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The instrument panel is digital with a 12.3-inch display. Four and six-cylinder models feature SensaTec new perforated upholstery with contrast stitching. Dakota leather is a standard feature on the M550i xDrive and an optional feature on other models, like Nappa leather.

One of the most important updates made compared to the previous model is the introduction of a soft hybrid system with a 48V start-up generator, which provides improved performance, better efficiency, and increased driving comfort in all 5-Series six-cylinder models. This technology includes the regeneration of braking energy, which starts when the driver releases the accelerator, converting kinetic energy into electricity, which accumulates in the 48 V battery. The recovered energy is supplied to the 12 V electric system and provides power to the lamps, steering, electric windows, ventilation, audio systems, and seat heating. The stored energy can also be used to provide additional drive power.
