Carwow reporters compared the dynamics of the BMW M8 and M5 on the runway.
Technically, the cars are very similar: that of the M5, that the M8 are equipped with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with a capacity (in Competition modification) of 625 horsepower. Units with 8-speed automatic transmissions ZF work. Both cars are equipped with an xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an active M-differential, which can redistribute torque to the front wheels up to one hundred percent. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in the BMW M5 takes 3.4 seconds, the M8 -3.3 seconds. However, the coupe weighs 15 kilograms more than the sedan – 1960 kg.
At the starting point, the BMW M5 is much inferior to the M8 due to the strange operation of the gearbox when activating the Launch Control system, which switches on second gear very early, which reduces the acceleration dynamics. When the start control system is disabled, the gearbox works adequately, but the start efficiency, in this case, is not as high as that of the M8. 1/4 mile distance, the so-called “quarter”, the coupe passes in 11 seconds, while the sedan takes 11.7 seconds.
When driving, the situation is different: cars drive almost the same, but with increasing speed the BMW M8 breaks away from the BMW M5 – the best aerodynamics are affected.
